National League Rugby’s official energy consultancy partner, Troo, have teamed up with HDM Energies to offer Solar for Sport.

Rising energy costs are affecting rugby clubs nationwide so Troo have launched a straightforward solar energy solution with no large upfront investment required.

Here’s how it works and why it could make a big difference for your club.

What is Solar for Sport?

Solar for Sport is designed specifically for sports clubs, aiming to cut energy bills and enhance sustainability. This solution allows clubs to produce their own electricity, reducing dependence on traditional suppliers and helping to stabilise running costs.

Key Benefits

  • No large upfront costs: There’s no initial investment required. HDM Energies covers the installation of the solar panel system, so clubs can start benefiting from day one.
  • Competitive energy rates: Clubs pay a fixed, lower-than-average rate starting at 16p per kWh, helping reduce electricity expenses. Rates are locked in for the duration of the contract.
  • Flexible contract terms: Clubs can choose a contract length that suits their needs, from five to 25 years. Longer commitments typically offer better rate stability.
  • Ongoing maintenance: The system is fully maintained by HDM Energies, so clubs don’t need to worry about repairs or unexpected maintenance costs.
  • Enhanced sustainability: By using solar power, clubs can lower their carbon footprint and demonstrate environmental leadership, which can boost their reputation with members and fans.
  • Enhanced facilities: The programme offers optional add-ons, such as electric vehicle (EV) charging points and battery storage. EV charging can create a new revenue stream, attracting visitors who drive electric vehicles. Battery storage provides up to 3 hours of power backup, which can be used as a reliable energy supply during peak times or matches.

Real-world example: Bridlington Town AFC (Football)

Clubs like Bridlington Town AFC have already seen impressive results. They installed a 400-panel solar array at their stadium, which will cut their annual energy costs by around £42,000. The club also chose to add EV charging points, enhancing convenience for visitors and creating a new source of income.
