New Plymouth head coach Damian Welch says the vision which the club has was a driving force behind him joining the National One side.

Welch, who lifted the Premiership title with Exeter Chiefs in 2017, is venturing into his first coaching role after building up experience with the University of Exeter during his time at Sandy Park.

The former Cardiff Blues and Scarlets man told ncarugby.com that the outline which Plymouth has for the future and their ethos of ‘Make Albion Great Again’ was an exciting opportunity for himself.

“I got in touch with Max [Venables] the CEO of the club and after having a talk with him, I spoke to Chris Bentley [Commercial Manager] who is a guy a knew from the Chiefs and the vision they laid out and where they want the club to go and the role it can play in the community was really exciting and interesting.”

Welch concluded his successful professional playing career a couple of years ago but during that time, the 37-year-old worked under some high profile coaches and he admits he has been able to pick up some hints and tips from his former bosses.

He added: “I had Shaun Edwards at Cardiff Blues. He is one of the world’s greatest defence coaches. Rob [Baxter], himself, was a mean defence coach and he was doing the job when I was at Chiefs so that is going to be key. I have been lucky in my career that I’ve got a good selection of coaching ideas and philosophies and different techniques on doing things to draw from.”
